Jesus’ encounter with the woman at the well is found in John 4:1-26. While traveling through Samaria, Jesus stopped at Jacob’s well, where He met a Samaritan woman. He asked her for a drink, which surprised her because Jews typically avoided Samaritans. Their conversation revealed Jesus’ deep knowledge of her life—He knew she had been married multiple times and was currently living with a man who wasn’t her husband.
Jesus then spoke of “living water” that leads to eternal life, contrasting it with the physical water from the well. The woman, recognizing Him as a prophet, brought up religious differences between Jews and Samaritans, but Jesus taught that true worship is about spirit and truth, not location.
Ultimately, Jesus revealed that He was the Messiah, leading the woman to spread the news to her town. Many Samaritans believed in Him because of her testimony. This encounter highlights Jesus’ offer of salvation to all people, regardless of background or past mistakes.
