2025 Shoreacres Awana Grand Prix

February 27th

On Thursday, February 27 we will be holding our annual Grand Prix Car Race.  Parents are invited to this exciting event.  We have a special speaker and refreshments will be served.  This race is primarily for Truth and Training, but we open it up to any Sparks who would like to participate.  Cubbies may not participate but can come and watch.  On Thursday (Jan. 9, opening night) our car kits go on sale for $3.00 and will be available each week.  They contain a block of wood, wheels and axles and directions.  You will need to provide paint for the cars.  Trophies will be given for first, second and third in speed and design (can be a car design or a novelty design).  Clubbers should do most of the work themselves, but if they get some help from Mom or Dad, that’s okay.

Please see the instructions that are in your car kit for details about the construction of your car.  It is important to remember that the maximum weight for the cars is 150 grams (5 ounces).  The block of wood plus wheels and axles weighs 106 grams (on average).  The cars that weigh 150 grams will usually go faster so you may want to add weights to your car.  I will bring a scale to club in the month of February so you can check the weight of your car plus weights you want to add.  At the Grand Prix we check to make sure no cars weigh more that 150 grams but will not be supplying weights.

If you do not have access to a power saw or coping saw, please have your child clearly mark in pencil on their block of wood the shape of the car as well as their name and bring it to Awana on a Thursday in January or February up until February 13, at the latest.  We have an Awana grandparent who will cut the cars and they will be returned to the clubber the following Thursday.

Thank you very much for your attention to this matter.  The aim is to provide rewarding and fun experiences for your children.  Parents (especially fathers) can have fun too.  Any parent or leader who wishes to make and enter a car is welcome.

Yours truly,

Pat Rapacchietta, T&T Director
